FREE TOOL

Find duplicate files on your Mac

Pick a folder, such as Downloads, and see which files are exact copies of each other, whatever their names. The tool only lists them: it never deletes anything.

Your files never leave this browser: the tool runs on your device, and nothing is uploaded.

How it works

  1. Click Choose a folder and pick it. The browser asks you to confirm that the page may read the files in it.
  2. Files with the same size are compared by their content (a SHA-256 fingerprint), so “Report (1).pdf” and “Report.pdf” match only if they really are the same.
  3. Copies are listed largest first, with where each one is, and how much space the extra copies take.
  4. Keep the copy you want and move the others to the Trash in Finder. Very large files (over 512 MB) are compared by their start and end and marked “likely”.

FAQ

Questions

Does this upload my files?

No. Your browser reads the files on your device to fingerprint them; nothing leaves it.

Will it delete anything?

No. It only lists the copies. You decide what to remove, in Finder.

How does it know two files are the same?

It compares content, not names: files of the same size get a SHA-256 fingerprint, and matching fingerprints mean the bytes are identical.

Is there a size limit?

Your browser holds each file in memory to fingerprint it, so folders of ordinary documents and photos are quick. Files over 512 MB are compared by their first and last 8 MB.
