Open the Downloads folder
Click Downloads in the Finder sidebar, or press Option-Command-L in Finder. The Downloads stack in the Dock opens the same folder.
Start with what takes the most room
- Switch to list view (Command-2), then click the Size column to sort the biggest files first. If you don’t see Size or Date Added, choose View › Show View Options and turn them on.
- Sort by Date Added to find what has sat there for months.
- On macOS 13 and later, System Settings › General › Storage, then the info button next to Documents, shows a Downloads list by size and date.
Remove what you’ve already used
- Installers. Search Downloads for
.dmgand.pkg. Once an app is in Applications, its installer can go. - Copies. Files named “Report (1).pdf” or “photo 2.jpg” are often second downloads of the same file. Open both before deleting one; our free duplicate file finder checks which are exact copies.
- Archives you’ve opened. A .zip you already unpacked is usually a spare copy of the folder next to it.
Keep what you still need
Bills, receipts, tickets, and signed forms often arrive as document(5).pdf or scan0001.pdf, so their names don’t warn you. Before deleting a whole batch, move the files you need into folders, such as Bills and Contracts, and delete the rest.
Then empty the Trash
Deleted files stay in the Trash, and still take space, until you choose Finder › Empty Trash (Shift-Command-Delete). In System Settings › General › Storage you can also turn on emptying the Trash automatically after 30 days.
Where Lisorto fits
Lisorto for Mac reads each file in Downloads on your Mac and proposes where it belongs, so the invoices go to Bills and receipts and the tickets to Travel before you clear the rest. Free up space (Pro) offers installers you already used, copies, and big files nobody opened in months; only what you pick goes to the Trash. Every move is shown first and can be undone.
