Where each app puts its downloads
- Safari saves to Downloads unless you changed it in Safari › Settings › General › File download location. Click the ↓ button in the toolbar to see recent ones.
- Chrome saves to Downloads unless you changed it in Settings › Downloads › Location. Press Option-Command-L in Chrome to see the list.
- Firefox uses Settings › General › Files and Applications › Downloads. The ↓ button in the toolbar lists recent ones.
- AirDrop saves received files to Downloads.
- Mail keeps attachments you open in its own folder inside your Library. To keep one, drag it from the message into Downloads or any folder.
Change where downloads go
Each browser has its own setting, listed above. A common choice is to keep Downloads as it is and sort it often, rather than scattering downloads across folders where they’re harder to find later.
Find a download you just lost
Open Downloads in list view (Command-2), turn on the Date Added column in View › Show View Options, and sort by it. The file you just got is at the top. If a browser shows the download but the file isn’t there, it may have been opened from a .zip or moved: right-click it in the browser’s list and choose Show in Finder.
Where Lisorto fits
Lisorto for Mac sorts Downloads for you: bills to Bills and receipts, tickets to Travel, installers to Installers, with a clear name for each scan, and you see every move before it happens. To see how much of Downloads is copies first, try the free duplicate file finder; it runs in your browser and uploads nothing.
