COMPARE

Mac file organizers, compared honestly

Five apps people weigh against each other, side by side: how each one sorts, where its AI runs, whether you see every move before it happens, and what it costs. We make Lisorto, so we also say when another app is the better pick.

How to choose

Rules or AI. Rules do exactly what you say and nothing else; AI handles files whose names say nothing, like scan0001.pdf. Lisorto does both: built-in rules first, AI for the rest, and your own rules on top.

Where your files are read. A file organizer reads invoices, contracts, and scans. Check whether that happens on your Mac or on someone’s server, and whether you can turn the cloud off.

Seeing moves first. The first run moves hundreds of files. An app that shows the whole plan and undoes it in one click makes that first run safe.

Finding files afterwards. Sorting helps, but most of the time you are looking for one file. Search inside files, scans included, is what makes a tidy folder useful.

FAQ

Questions

What is the best file organizer for Mac?

It depends on how you work. If you like writing precise rules, Hazel is the classic choice. If you want AI to sort a messy Downloads folder and to see every move first, with files read on your Mac, Lisorto fits. On Windows and Linux too, Sortio. For audio and video by their content, Floxtop.

Which Mac file organizers keep files on my Mac?

Lisorto and Floxtop read files on your Mac by default. Sortio extracts content locally but sends file names and metadata to its cloud AI unless you use your own key or Ollama. Sparkle’s site doesn’t say where its AI runs. Hazel uses your rules, not AI.

Can I try these apps for free?

Lisorto has a free tier of 100 files a month and a 7-day trial of everything with no card. Floxtop and Sortio have free tiers, Sparkle a 15-day trial, and Hazel a free trial, according to their sites.

Do I have to pay a subscription?

Not for Lisorto, Hazel, or Floxtop: each has a one-time price. Sortio and Sparkle are subscriptions according to their sites. Lisorto also offers monthly and yearly plans that include Cloud AI.
